On the SSC Summer SChool Edinburgh, you don’t just learn by in-class study. You experience the language first-hand, like a native-speaker.
On the Summer SChool Edinburgh you learn by a project and activity-based approach. When you are in an English-speaking country, it makes sense to make use of the English language environment that surrounds you. The project activities take you outside the classroom to places in and around Edinburgh. This gives you the opportunity to use the language you learn in class as you speak to people in order to carry out your project work.
On the SSC Summer SChool Edinburgh you use in-class time as preparation for, and also feedback on, integrated project activities. These activities take you on study tours to Edinburgh’s and Scotland’s main historical and cultural sites. As you study, for example, you can visit Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, Loch Ness, and many more exSSCiting places.
On your study tours, you can choose to have a native-speaker ‘Study Guide’. The study guide helps you with your project work and makes sure that you use English at all times.
Summer SChool Edinburgh Harry Potter style
You can also choose to go on integrated study tours to the Highlands, including to Loch Ness and to Glenfinnan Viaduct, where you can ride on the exciting “Harry Potter” steam train!

SSC believes that learning a language takes place, not just by in-class study, but by experiencing the language first-hand. This is why on the English Language Summer School Edinburgh, you learn English in class and then you use the English you learn as you carry out study activities and projects in and around Edinburgh and also to the Highlands of Scotland.
When you are in an English-speaking country, it makes sense to make use of the English language environment that surrounds you, and on your study tours, you can choose to have a highly proficient English speaker as a ‘Study Guide.’ The job of the Study Guide is to help you with your project work and make sure that use English at all times.
Summer SChool Edinburgh courses
There are 3 types of English Language summer School courses:
- Academic Study: learn to write academic essays, give academic presentations, and take part in academic discussion. Learn how to get higher grades on your university / college courses! You can also opt for the ‘University visit’ option that allows you to visit different Scottish universities and learn about the courses they offer. This option is ideal if you are thinking of coming to Scotland to study at university. - Business Study: learn the basics of business theory and practice and also write your CV and learn how to answer job interview questions to get the job you want..This course is ideal if you want to work in an English language business / work environment. - ‘Caledon’ (Culure and Language Education): improve your English and at the same time learn about Scottish history and culture. You study English in class for 3 hours each day, and then you use your English as you carry put study activities and projects in and around Edinburgh and to the Scottish Highlands. On the ‘Caledon’ course, you can go on integrated study tours to the Highlands of Scotland, including to Loch Ness and to Glenfinnan, where you can ride on the famous “Harry Potter” steam train. This course is ideal if you want to improve your English and also have a really great time in Edinburgh and in Scotland.
You can choose a mixture of an Academic or Business course + the ‘Caledon’ course. This gives you an ideal balance between serious academic / business study and enjoying all that Edinburgh and Scotland have to offer.
Summer SChool Edinburgh: Caledon ‘Edinburgh Festival’ course
In August, the Edinburgh Festival makes Edinburgh THE place to be, and SSC runs a special Caledon ‘Edinburgh Festival’ course that allows you to experience all the fun and excitement of the Festival first-hand, as a participant! Yes! – If you can dance, sing, act, play a musical instrument, or tell a joke, you can perform in street performances and at SSC to a live audience as part of the the Edinburgh Festival Fringe!

Summer SChool Edinburgh Harry Potter style:
Ride over the Glenfinnan Viaduct on the “Harry Potter Hogwarts’ Express”
You can also choose to go on integrated study tours to the Highlands, including to Loch Ness and to Glenfinnan Viaduct, where you can ride on the exciting “Harry Potter” steam train (Also known as the “Jacobite Express”)
